Monster Protecting in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

How's everyone enjoying Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate? I'm over 150 hours in and I'm happy to say that all the rules of Monster Protector Tri apply to MH3U. Thus, I've renamed the site Monster Protector 3, to encompass all versions of the 3rd Monster Hunter!

MH3U game is still very new, so I understand that people are still much more into farming rare mats  than protecting monsters, but remember that upswinging and flash/smoke bombing your friends while keeping your Barroth alive is a great way to spend a couple hours!

Have a video of you and your friends playing Monster Protector 3? Send it to me at and I'll post it on the site! Enjoy the chaos!

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate coming to Nintendo 3DS and Wii U!

The Monster Hunter gods (Capcom) have finally seen it fit to grace the the world outside of Japan with a NEW MONSTER HUNTER GAME! Oh happy day! Sure, it'll probably just be the definitive version of MHTri with all the features of Portable 3rd and 3G thrown in, but it's gonna be on Wii U! HD Monster Hunter!

Not only that, but according to Capcom's press release, it's gonna be the ultimate experience as you can take it from your living room to the bathroom on your 3DS!

"Players can experience the world of Monster Hunter alone or in four player local play using the Nintendo 3DS. Finding nearby hunters to adventure on quests with is now even easier via the local Nintendo 3DS search feature. Wii U players will be able to enjoy the hunt with Nintendo 3DS players via a local wireless connection. Gamers that own both a Wii U and Nintendo 3DS can take advantage of the inter compatibility of save data between the two consoles, taking the hunt from the living room to wherever they go."

I couldn't be more pumped! As these games will probably just be an update of the Tri forumla, the Monster Protector rules should still apply! Good times, people!

Protecting Alatreon!

Hey all!
Youtube user mh3journey posted a totally epic Monster Protector Tri Alatreon run! Though why anyone would want to protect that vile elder dragon is beyond me! I mean, a Peco, I can understand. A Rathian, sure. But that Skypiercer-withholding bastard? No way! Hey, to each there own I guess.

Check out the video of some of the most heartless/hilarious upswings you've ever seen in defense of a monster! Awesome run you guys! Thanks for the link!

Determining a Winner in MPTri

Okay, so I've been getting a lot of emails regarding how to determine a winner after the 4 rounds. The final scoring works out like this:

• The PROTECTOR that keeps their monster alive the longest OR kills the ATTACKERS the fastest wins.
• Killing the ATTACKERS ranks above keeping your monster alive.

Here's an example:
ROUND 1: ATTACKERS kill the monster in 7:35
ROUND 2: ATTACKERS triple-cart in 7:45
ROUND 3: ATTACKERS kill the monster in 6:20
ROUND 4: ATTACKERS triple-cart in 9:00

The ranking would look like this:
1st PLACE: ROUND 2 PROTECTOR (for triple-carting the ATTACKERS the fastest)
3rd PLACE: ROUND 1 PROTECTOR (did not triple-cart the ATTACKERS, but kept their monster alive the longest)

I hope this makes sense to everyone and helps clarify how to determine a winner! Have fun!

Monster Protector Tri Videos!

Hey all!
I think I've found the source of some of the pageviews this blog's been getting as of late: Monster Protector Tri Youtube videos!

Youtube users SocialDissonance and MH3shewar posted a few vids of MPTri in action and it does a pretty great job of capturing the frantic fun of the game! Thanks to SocialDissonance and MH3shewar for posting the videos and helping promote the game!

Everyone seems to be following the rules pretty thoroughly in the videos below! Looks like a blast don't it? Think it's about time you got a crew together and tried it yourselves? I do!

The Art of Launching

Hey all!
Not sure why exactly, but I've been receiving A LOT of mail about Monster Protector Tri lately! Maybe its because MHTri's most devoted players are starting to reach the limit of the loot they've been jonesing for and are ready for a change of pace! Monster Protector is the perfect game to play when you've gotten all the Skypiercers you need and wanna try something new.

Or maybe you're like HR 35 player Noob 1444 and just enjoy the finer points of LAUNCHING fellow players! Noob was nice enough to share his views on the art of the upswing with us so that we may use it for both, the protection and demise of the Monster:

The Many Uses for an Upswing or an Unsheathe Attack
1)  Keeping people away from the Monster you are Protecting
2)  Saving people's hides and taking the fall to keep your Attacker quest going
3)  Generally Ticking people off for your own pleasure

While ticking people off and playing as a Protector with an Switch Axe or Hammer is easiest (and more fun than it should be), the real skill is in doing it with the Sword & Shield. Sheild bashing takes a while to perfect as you have to judge the timing and predict where the Attacker is going to be when you do it. Watching a body soar over your pitfalled Diablos when you get it right, however, is hilarious, satisfying and well worth the effort (Great Sword upswing also work well in this scenario). The hilarity triples on a Jhen hunt when you send someone off the side of the ship into the sand. Classic!

On the other hand, you can HELP your fellow Attackers by upswinging them ONTO Jhen's back if they miss the opportunity to jump onto it's fin! Jhen move slightly out of range? Just launch your buddy's ass on over! They'll thank you later if they manage to stick the landing. If used correctly, upswinging and launching can be incredibly helpful and, at times, even necessary!

A great example is while hunting a HR Great Jaggi with one other Attacker who was using LR hunter's armor. He was running low on health when the Great Jaggi was about to finish him off with a bodycheck. Sensing the imminent quest fail, I ran up to the guy and used an unsheathe attack with my Hammer, sending him sailing over the checking Jaggi. I took the hit as he ran and healed. I was using Leather + armor (don't judge me, I'm only HR35, remember?) and took considerably less damage than he would have. I proceeded to smash the Jaggi's face for him to help end the quest. Quest Complete. Hope he appreciated the sacrifice!

Great story Noob 1444! Indeed, upswinging is the bread and butter for any Protector trying to keep his Monster alive the longest, but thanks for sharing tips on how Attackers can take advantage of the strategy as well!

Thanks to everyone who has written and/or tried the game out yourselves! Spread the word and get others to play with you! Refer them to this site for the rules and have fun!
